Less is More

Minimalism emerged particularly in the United States during the 1960s and advocates a focus on essence by eliminating unnecessary elements across art, design, and lifestyle practices, in line with the principle that “less is more.” In the field of art, the movement became embodied through figures such as Donald Judd and Agnes Martin, and is characterized by simple geometric forms, a limited color palette, and an avoidance of emotional dramatization. In design, the emphasis lies on the use of negative space, clean grid systems, and the reduction of visual noise, while as a lifestyle philosophy, minimalism signifies conscious consumption and practices of simplification; its fundamental aim is not merely reduction, but the intensification of attention and meaning.

Neo-minimalism is an approach that preserves the rigid, industrial, and geometric simplicity of classical minimalism while reinterpreting it through a warmer, more atmospheric, and contemporary aesthetic understanding. In contrast to the harsh forms and absolute reductionism of the 1960s, neo-minimalism operates through softer lighting, natural textures, neutral and desaturated tones, spatial depth, and sensory calmness; the aim is not merely reduction, but the creation of emotion, atmosphere, and a sense of timelessness within a simplified visual field. For this reason, it can be defined as a contemporary practice of simplification that seeks to generate an intensity that is subtle yet perceptible across art, design, photography, and architecture.

In design, minimalism is generally characterized by the use of negative space, limited typography, clean grid systems, and a restrained color palette. The primary aim of this approach is to enhance the clarity of the message while reducing visual noise.

Within the context of a lifestyle philosophy, minimalism manifests through principles such as fewer possessions, reduced consumption, simple living, and rational decision-making. In this philosophical perspective, which emphasizes mental decluttering and simplicity, aesthetic concerns tend to recede into the background.
